Silk is actually a natural protein fiber that is often woven into textiles. The history of silk is as old as 27th century BC and it is one of the clothing materials used by the most affluent people and royals all around the world since centuries.
The history of silk actually began from China. According to Chinese historians, the history of silk could even be as old as 6000 BC or 3000 BC. It is said that the Chinese Empress Xi Ling Shi had first created Silk. From then onwards it was reserved only for the Royals of China. However, with the passage of time, it spread through the masses and became one of the most widely used formal dressing material.
With the opening of the Silk Route, Silk was exported to other places through Chinese merchants and eventually it spread through Asia to other parts of the world. The key evidence of silk trade was found in the hair of an Egyptian Mummy as old as 21st Dynasty. In order to maintain the Chinese monopoly on silk trade, the Chinese emperors kept the sericulture of silk very secret. However, it eventually reached Korea in 200 BC and then spread around the world.
