A nerve cell receives electro-chemical stimulus from other cells, and passes it on to the next nerve cell. In the sensory system the first cell would be reacting to a stimulus, and it would go up the chain of nerve cells to the appropriate area of the brain. In the other direction, the brain cells would initiate an action, and the signal would pass down to the nerve cell that connects to a muscle for instance.

It sits in an office and sends criticising e-mails to members of staff, then books itself a day off without telling anyone else...Sorry, Ben - I couldn't resist making a dig at my boss... Unfortunately I can't answer your question sensibly, as I have forgotten the details of what a nerve cell does - I hope you get an answer you can use! Good luck.
