How Do I Get Started As An Artist?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

There are numerous opportunities to exhibit and sell your work. Many are low-cost and a great way to build your CV.

Consider joining a co-op gallery.  A co-op gallery is a group of artists who rent a gallery as a group, thus sharing the expenses involved.  Most co-ops have member shows at least once a year, so you will have a chance to exhibit.  Sometimes membership fees are waived in return for help at the gallery. It is also a great way to meet other artists.

Public spaces like banks and restaurants are another venue where beginning artists can publicize their work.  It is becoming a popular trend for restaurants to host continually changing exhibitions. Since restaurants are a place where customers linger, your work will definitely receive more than a passing glance!

Also, consider an internet gallery. It pays to do your research - if you are considering joining an internet gallery, contact a few member artists if possible. Find out how the gallery has helped them. Internet galleries can give valuable exposure, but avoid those with unreasonably high membership fees. Your money may be better invested in art supplies!
