What Does Maroon Mean?

Answer Question

2 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

Maroon is a deep red colour which comes from a French word, maroon which when loosely translated to English means chestnut. It officially became a colour word in the year 1791. There are many colours which can be formed out of the colour maroon. Some people like painters still argue that maroon can be a variant shade of red or brown. Some of the other colours which are closely related to maroon are burgundy, carmine, burnt umber, auburn and other similar colours. The word marooning also means leaving somebody deserted on an unrecognised island or area. The leaving behind of the person is done intentionally.
