How Can I Make Driving In The Wet Safer?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Check the wiper blades and replace them if the rubber looks frayed, damaged or torn. Next, check the condition of your vehicle's tyres ensuring that they are all properly inflated – including the spare wheel – are not showing signs of damage and have plenty of tread left across the entire face of the tyre.

When you think of it, the average family saloon has, at any one time, the equivalent of one A4 sheet of paper coming into contact with the road. That is not a lot of rubber holding you onto the road, so you want to be very sure it's in first class condition to do so, especially in the wet.

Keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front, you'll need more stopping distance than normal. Think ahead and anticipate what is happening on the road. Never brake suddenly in the wet unless it is an emergency. Stomping on the brakes is one of the best ways to induce a skid. Always strive to make your braking smooth and progressive, likewise with accelerating.

Standing water can make your vehicle aquaplane, so always slow down for large puddles or road flooding.
