Megacolon is basically a kind of an uncharacteristic dilatation of the colon. The dilatation is frequently accompanied by a paralysis of the peristaltic actions of the bowel, ensuing in constant constipation. In some cases faeces are found inside the colon, which are known as fecalomas. This needs to be removed with the help of a surgery. The megacolon is basically considered to be either acute or chronic.

Some of the signs and symptoms are constipation, abdominal bloating, tenderness and tympany, abdominal pain, fever, low blood potassium and shock. In some cases the usual measures do not work, then there is a need of doing surgery.
