What Can I Do About Noisy Neighbours?

Answer Question

2 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

A home can be a great place to relax, especially when you decorate it the way that you want to. You may have had a bad day and you just want nothing more than to relax. However sometimes things happen and if you have noisy neighbours, it can certainly make things a lot worse for you.

There are some neighbours that personally make lots of noise to annoy people, and then there are others that shout, kick doors and smash windows. Whatever the reason is, they are becoming a nuisance to the neighbourhood and if they are causing problems they can be reported. The best thing to do is to ring up your local council office and ask to speak to someone from the noise abatement team. They will send someone out to try and sort the problem out for you and if things progress after that, the person or family can get an anti social behaviour order or even be evicted from their home.

Assuming your neighbors in question are not crazies or repulsive beyond redemption, I would try to make their acquaintances. You don't have to be buddies, but do get to know each other by name and a little bit about the family. You'll be surprised at what a difference that will make: Suddenly it's your friend John who is shouting at his wife Linda while their 7-year old Michael is banging his drums… They are also aware of you, their friend next door, and will try to avoid annoying people they know. You are no longer total strangers to be dismissed. Now you can stroll over and show concern. "Hey, what's going on, John? Is there anything I can help?" instead of "Hey you! Keep your racket down or I'll call the police!"

Besides that, you'll find the noisy activities amusing: Look, John is fighting with his pregnant wife again. Wow! That sounded like a flower pot smashing John's new Camaro…. It's life drama in Surround Sound---definitely more interesting than watching it played by actors on TV.

Change the perspective, change your attitude and the whole world shifts to your liking.
