Presidential elections of the United States are considered as fair and just. But the process is considered very difficult to understand. Actually, the President is elected by the votes of the electoral college. The electoral college has electors that are appointed by each state. Each state has its own mechanisms of selecting the electoral college, However, currently all the electorals are elected by popular vote of voters of each state. In order to be the President of the United States the candidate needs 270 votes from the electoral college. So each vote really counts.

Depending on where you live can determine if your vote counts.  For example the state of Vermont is primarily a Democrat state.  If you are a Republican your vote will not count in that state.  The electoral college votes will automatically be given to the Democrat candidate.
