What Is A Composting Toilet?

Answer Question

2 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

A composting toilet is basically a storage box, where excrement gets stored until it breaks down into rich fertiliser you remove manually to use in your own garden.  It can range in size from a large box that fits within your bathroom to a vault that would usually be kept in a cellar or underground.  Decomposition may be aided by the addition of tiger worms, sawdust or cardboard.  Smaller units sometimes employ heaters or mixing equipment.  If installed correctly, a composting toilet is supposed to not smell, but some venting may be required.  In appearance, it usually looks like a conventional flush toilet but with a very large base.

A very simple composting toilet would simply be a bale of hay to urinate on; it will absorb the urine and slowly break down into fertile soil.

Sometimes the so called toilet has a hardware screen on the bottom and a piece of tin below that about 2 inches, funneling it to a catch basin.  The liquids that are funneled to the catch basin is called compost tea.  You can use this as fertilizer on your plants as well.  Works for me!!!  Hope this helps!!!
