Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

An ovum is the term given to a single female reproductive cell or a female reproductive gamete. This particular word has its roots in Latin and means egg or egg cell. An ovum is also known as an egg cell. Thus an ovum is so called because of its oval, egg-shape. Animals as well as embryophytes have ova. 'Ovule' is the term given to an animal's young ovum. It is also known as oosphere in certain plants, such as in algae.

With regards to the production of ova (the plural of the term 'ovum', in higher animals it is observed that ova are formed by female gonads (that is, sexual glands) known as ovaries. In mammals, all of them are there at birth, and mature though oogenesis.
