Because of the dearth of war supplies and monetary support, the Confederate army was in desperate need for some foreign assistance. But for that purpose, they had to prove their worthiness and strength to the foreign powers such as Great Britain to earn their support. Realizing this fact, Jefferson Davis (who was the President of the Confederate States of America) and General Robert Lee decided to carve out a strategy that would earn them a major victory against the Union army.

This plan involved the capture of Maryland, which was although a slave state nevertheless it was still joined to the Union, more precisely referred to as a border state. Nevertheless it was the tough luck of the Confederacy that this excellent plan of theirs got leaked out and came in the knowledge of one of the Union soldiers who were fighting under General George McClellan. As a result, the plan of the Confederacy never got accomplished.
