What Game Reserves Are There In The Kalahari Desert?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The Kalahari Desert lying in southern Africa is home to a large diversity of flora and fauna; the Kalahari is referred to as an arid savannah region rather than a desert on account of the moderate rainfall it receives (250 mm annually) especially in the northern parts.

The Kalahari is well known for the several game reserves located in its midst like the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park lying on the South Africa-Botswana border, the Khutse Game Reserve and Central Kalahari Game Reserve lying in Botswana. A number of animal species like hyenas, lions, antelopes, oryx, meerkat, elephant, crocodiles, pythons, zebra and hippopotamus as well as birds like eagle, flamingo, vultures, ostrich, egret and kingfisher among others are found in the game reserves.

The parks are popular with tourists and provide accommodation replete with modern amenities as well as wilderness camps for the adventurous. The world's largest mine the Orapa diamond mine owned by DeBeers and the government of Botswana is also located in the Kalahari Desert; the region is home to the Bushmen tribes who once lived in entire southern Africa but now live in parts of Botswana and Namibia.
