What Are UCAS Tariffs?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

A UCAS tariff is the amount of points that a particular University or college require you to get before they will give you access to their institution or establishment.

Tariffs often change on a yearly basis and during the period in the summer after a-level and other post-sixteen qualification results are published, then colleges and universities go into a 'Clearing' period where students can apply to enter courses that don't have a full cohort of students already, with lower grades.

The UCAS website, has a points calculator, where you can put in all of your qualifications and see if you have enough to get into the place you applied for.  Some places will accept you whether you get the points or not, but this is strictly not allowed by UCAS, but some departments pretend not to know that.

After you have been interviewed, or when your UCAS form has been looked over, you will be offered a chance to make a confirmed choice and a backup choice.  If you reach your points, you are bound to go to your first choice and your second choice may not accept you without permission from the first choice institution.
