What Is A Permanent IV?

Mother in 85 years old had a stroke now has phunomonia,they cannot not find any good veins and have poked and poked veins no good.doc wants to put a permanent IV where is this put in the body?

I had one called a PICC line. It is a type of an IV that is "permanent".
I don't know what PICC stands for, though.
A permanent IV is an IV that doesn't have to be changed as frequently like normal IVs.

Usually a PICC line is implanted in your chest area. My sister received chemotherapy and all other medications through this line. Sometimes medications can be so harsh, they will cause the veins to collapse. So having a line open at all times, prevents a great deal of pain and frustration. I hope all goes well with your mother.

When my Brother had meningitis and after he got out of the hospital, he had to have the visiting nurse comes 3 times a week to give him antibiotic in which he had an IV put in. He had to have this antibiotic for 3 months and the only way they could give it was through an IV. It wasn't permanent but but he had to have one and he had to take care of it or it would become infected.

I would also add that since the mother is sick they need to find some artery or vein to put the antibiotics into this person body to attack this pneumonia. Did they try the neck arteries, they are a good site to use. but in an elderly person they are afraid that she might pull it out. The reason for the docs to put one in is to fight the infection since she can not have or swallow oral medications. I know of one patient who had a tube in the stomach for medication because he could not swallow
