What Is The Meaning And Origin Of The Name Clay?

My son's name is Clay and I am doing a baby book for him and I cannot find a comprehensive meaning and origin of his name beside just "mortal" and malleable earth".

    Clay is English and translated literally means clay or claypit worker.
    Clay is also derives from the name Clayton which translated means 'clay settlement'.

    I wanted a more descriptive answer than this. I already had that it means clay or claypit worker. Thank you for the answer though. I will keep searching...
