We use blankets on our horses most of the time for one reason or another....On their own, a horse will grow hair depending on the length of the day...When we have the shortest daylight hours a horse will have a long thick hair coat to keep him warm in the cold winter months. When we have the longest daylight hours, a horse will have a short hair coat, to keep him cool in the hot summer months. When we show horses, we want them to keep a shorter hair coat, so we keep them in stalls, under lights on timers to simulate the longest day of the year. So we need warm blankets to keep them warm and clean in the cold weather. When its hot we use sheets (light, thin blankets) to keep them clean and to protect them from getting  bleached out from the sun. We also might use fly sheets, to protect them from fly bites. So the answer to your question kind of depends on the horse, where the horse spends most of his time, and what his intended purpose is....
