The camera usually has little to do with the way a photo looks as long as the camera is properly working. There are several things you can do to improve your photos from a composition perspective:
    1) Practice getting closer to your subject.  When it's all boiled down, when you take photos of people, the only thing most people are concerned with is the face.  This is what defines the person. No other body part does this. If you have a zoom lens, instead of moving closer, move back further and zoom in.
    2) Composition - rule of thirds - divide your view screen by imaginary lines that split the picture into thirds.  Do this vertically and then horizontally. You end up with a grid so to speak.  The best place to locate your subject is on one of those lines...better yet at the intersection of a vertical and a horizontal line.  Suffice it to say, never locate your subject at dead center.
    3) One of the best books I have ever seen is the Kodak Guide to 35mm Photography.  I used it as a text when I taught at a local community college. ISBN#0-87985-801-X

Hope this helps.  If not give me some more detail and I'd be happy to help.
