Duren is a small town located in the North Rhine-Westplalia. It is positioned between Aachen and Cologne on the river Rur. It has a total population of around 90,000.

The history of Duren dates back to around 2000 years. Before the birth of Jesus Christ, the Cels use to already reside here. Their small settlement was known as Durum. After the Celts many other Germanic tribes started setting up bases here. These places were subjugated by Romans under Julius Caesar.

Durum mainly became one of the delivering points for the fast growing Roman city of Cologne. The Romans were based in this area for another 400 years. After the influence of Romans, during the 5th century the Franconians came to Duren. The Franconian King Pippin Der Klein often paid visits to Duren during the 8th century and had held a few important gathering during his visits here.
