How Long Can A Domesticated Rabbit Live For?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

A domestic rabbit can live up to 12 years. The Guinness record for the oldest rabbit is held by a 14-year old   Netherlands dwarf rabbit. Their average lifespan is 6-8 years though with proper care and attention they can live much longer. Rabbits kept outdoors in backyard hutches have a much lower age-average. This is because merely the sight or scent of a predator can make the rabbit panic and either injure herself or even die of shock.

There are a few basic rules to follow to ensure that your rabbit has a long and healthy life.  It is most important that its diet is right. Substituting grass for the more common (and convenient) pet shop mix is advisable as it will ensure that your rabbit has no dental problems (the single largest killer of domesticated rabbits). Make sure that your rabbit has his vaccinations and annual booster on time. Myxomatosis is still a very real problem and should not be ignored. Neutering is very beneficial to female rabbits as it prevents Uterine and ovarian cancer (1 in every3 female rabbits suffer from either of the two). Make sure that your rabbit has plenty of space but make sure that you also protect it from predators. Finally make sure that your rabbit is taken for regular check-ups.
