This excellent short poem has been composed by the famous Irish poet W. b. Yeats. Yeats had firm faith in literary nationalism and his poetry trended to idealise his own country, Ireland.
In this poem we meet a different world. It has a quality of dream and longing about it. The poet expresses an intense passion of love for his beloved. He aspires to present very precious gifts to his sweet heart. He wishes to obtain heavenly cloths embroidered with golden and silver light in beautiful patterns. He wishes to spread those cloths under the feet of his beloved. But he admits that being poor; he cannot afford such expensive gifts.
However, he is rich in ideas and plans. He offers his dreams to be spread under the feet of his beloved. He requests his beloved to walk softly on his fine and delicate dreams. In these lines the poet has personified his country as a beloved. He is deeply in love with his country. He wants to raise it to the heights of glory. He is willing to sacrifice whatever he has for the sake of his country. This is a fact that Yeats changes history into poetry. The poem has a great appeal and is symbolic in nature.
