What Does A Hair Transplant Involve?

Answer Question

Before surgery, in the preparation time, your hair will be trimmed short in the donor areas so that the grafts can be removed more easily. The number of large plugs (10-15 hairs) transplanted in the first session varies, but the average is about 50. For mini-grafts (4-10 hairs) or micro-grafts (1-2 hairs), the number can be up to 700 per session.

For punch grafts, a sharp tube made of carbon steel is used to literally punch out a plug from a healthy area of the scalp. A similar sized hole is made in the bald area and the small plug is inserted. or other types of grafts, a scalpel is used to remove small sections of hair-bearing scalp, which will be divided into tiny sections and transplanted into tiny holes or slits within the bald area.

The surgeon closes the donor site holes with a single stitch and also stitches the graft in place. Some slit scars can be left afterwards but scarring is usually hidden by the hair.

After the grafting session is complete, the scalp will be cleansed and covered with gauze and sometimes a pressure bandage.
