My mother and I are having a disagreement about how to keep our christmas tree alive. What is the best way to keep it alive?

Alive? So you dug up the roots and all or do you mean keeping it moist so that it won't catch fire as easily after it was cut down?
To keep it moist, you need to continue to give it water through the part that was cut off. Cold air is also very dry so you should have it in a warm environment but no heat blowing directly on it as that also is very dry. Make sure to fill the tree stand full each day and it will begin to drink more and more as time goes on.
