Amazingly they usually are exactly the same breed. Goldfish are very good at self-regulating. They will not breed if the current population exceeds viable levels for their environment and they will not grow if by so doing they will outgrow their tank. Goldfish kept indoors for months or even years can be released into suitable larger tanks or ponds and will grow simply because they have more space. Of course there are different varieties of goldfish and each has a typical average and maximum size which does vary. However, the main determinants of goldfish size are environment and population. The fan tail, veil tail and black moor will grow to a maximum of around 20 centimetres. Most other goldfish varieties will grow up to 38 centimetres and this includes varieties called the celestial, the comet, the common goldfish, the oranda and the lionhead.
