Jews are a religious sect, descended from the fourth son of Jacob who was named Judah, who came from the ancient tribe of Israelites. It is also one of the oldest religions, having originated around 1800 BC. Today, the adherents of Judaism are widely dispersed in the world. Their population numbers over 14.5 million at present. A majority of them live in of Israel and in the US. Included in this are also people who have undergone an official conversion to Judaism.
The Torah is the holy book of the Jews and contains the teachings and instructions of the Jewish faith. Written in Hebrew, the Jewish language, it also contains the Law of Moses.
Defeated by the Romans in the years 70CE and 135, the Jewish population was expelled from their lands and sold into slavery throughout the Roman Empire.
