Do Hedgehogs Communicate?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Hedgehogs are so called because as they come through hedges they do sound like a hog or boar: grunting, spluttering, snorting and even coughing.
However, they do also communicate with each other, on at least a rudimentary level.
The mother hedgehog who rears the young on her own, will whistle to her young, to gather them together if they are to move to another place to seek food.
She may also signal that there is danger around, by a high pitched whistle.  This 'whistle' is often a series of short clicks which is very different to other noises made, so it conveys a message of danger or threat.

If one of the young finds a good supply of food, they will also give a whistling signal to the others, who will then join the hedgehog who has found the bounty.  The mother will also respond to this noise, but sometimes will not join in eating the food, but wait to ascertain if there is any danger around.
