The famous name for the Teddy Bear is derived from Theodore Roosevelt.  President Roosevelt was hunting one day during his presidency when he had trapped an old bear.  Feeling bad for the bear, he let the bear go.  Political cartoons started drawing "Teddy's Bear" and the rest is history!  If you would like more information on this subject, please visit en.wikipedia.org where you can also find another variation of the story.

You can thank our terrific President Teddy Roosevelt for our beloved Teddy bears.  He was an avid defender of the environment, but also was a skilled hunter.  The story goes that on a hunting expedition, Teddy came upon a young bear.  Knowing that this young animal needed it's mother to survive, he did not harm it.  The story was picked up by the newspapers and the President was regarded as having a kind heart.  Cartoons, stories and even a toy were dedicated to this man's good nature and regard for life. (Well, at least the life of a defenseless young bear.)  The Teddy Bear toy become wildly popular and continues to be just as special today as it was almost a century ago.  Now, can we bank on our politicians today and hope that they too could demonstrate such heart?
