MI5 is the name of the Security Service. The Security Service is derived from the Secret Service Bureau. It was established in 1909. MI5 means 'Military Intelligence [Department] 5.' It also means 'Military Intelligence section 5'.MI5 is the British counter Intelligence and security agency.
The main aim of the Secret Service Bureau was to control secret intelligence operations in the UK and overseas. The Bureau was split into Naval and Army sections.
The function of MI5 is to protect the United Kingdom from terrorism and to fight against serious crime. It is totally related with the internal security.
