I'm afraid I've only just seen this question! It's a while since you wrote it, so maybe your finances have changed by now. But just in case...

I really admire your attitude, and totally agree with it. I've always found that you can manage on a very small income as long as you do save a bit, because you always manage to have a little "cushion" against unexpected expenses. I'm a fan of looking after the pennies; throwing odd change, coins etc into a jar when you come back from shopping; and always putting something aside each week. Even if it's only a couple of dollars, in a few weeks you have a sum of money that you can do something with. (The difficult part, I find, is to "forget" it's there and NOT treat that little fund as a bank!)

If you have more control over how your money gets spent (ie, not too many unexpected expenses) could you make a small regular payment into a bank or savings account? I've done this for years, and I'm always amazed how it adds up if you don't touch it for a time.

Last tip: I highly recommend a book called "You and Your Money" by Alvin Hall. It really changed my feelings about money. Best of luck!
