On the night of the 27th February 1933, at 9:22, a fire was discovered in the Reichstag parliament building. It started in the main chamber and spread into 25 separate fires. Vanne der Lubbe, a young half-naked Dutchman was found in the building at the time and was immediately arrested and questioned. His statement pointed out that he was a communist until 1929 who was against the Nazi regime and had to carry out a protest because the workers wouldn't do anything. He also said he set fire to the building on his own, he had no one to help him.
Hitler and Goebbles were having diner at the time of the fire. A phone call was answered by Goebbles which informed him of the incident. At first, however, he considered it as a joke and didn't tell Hitler about it. After numerous other calls, the two found out it was true and rushed to the City Centre at 70 m.p.h. When they got there, the building was in flames. This gave Hitler an excuse to kill any people associated with the Communists.
