    Self-Esteem:
It is a belief about one's own self-worth based on an overall self-evaluation. Self-esteem is measured by having survey respondents indicate their agreement or disagreement with both positive and negative statements. A positive statement on one general self-esteem survey is: "I feel I do not have much to be proud of." Those who agree with the positive statements and disagree with the negative statements have high self-esteem. They see themselves as worthwhile, capable, and acceptable. People with low self-esteem view themselves as in negative terms. They do not feel good about themselves and are hampered by self-doubts.

The Battle over Self-Esteem: The subject of self –esteem has generated a good deal of controversy in recent years, particularly among educators and those seeking to help the disadvantaged. While both sides generally agree that positive self-esteem is a good thing for students and youngsters, disagreement rages over how to improve self-esteem.

Self-Esteem across Cultures: What is the cross-cultural implication for self-esteem, a concept that has been called uniquely Western? In a survey of 13,118 students from 31 countries world wide, a moderate positive correlation was found between self-esteem and life satisfaction. But the relationship was stronger in individualistic cultures than in collectivist cultures.
