The Hummer was developed for military use in the early 80s, and was developed by AM General Corporation. It was called the HMMWV, also popularly known as the Humvee. During the initial tests the Hummer became popular for its excellent mobility, agility, and speed. It was widely used during the 1991 Gulf War, and received a lot of media attention. In 1992 AM General began developing versions of the Humvee for civilian use under the name ‘Hummer’. Actor and California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger was publicized as possibly the first owner of a civilian Hummer. Hummers have often been associated with their celebrity owners like Arnold Schwarzenegger. He was the first civilian customer of AM General. He bought a custom made version of the military model, and purchased civilian production models too.
