The Mission San Diego de Alcala was established on the 16th of July in the year 1769. It was the foremost of the twenty one Alta California mission series founded by Father Presidente Junipiero Serra.

In present times it is referred to as California's church. The mission was attacked on the 5th of November in the year 1775. The father in charge at that time, Father Jayme, who was kept behind by Father Serra was murdered in this attack. Ultimately peace was regained in the region.

By the time the Mission de Alcala was handed back to the Church, it was in a completely demolished state.
