The Chilling Stars, A New Theory of Climate Change, by Henrik Svensmark and Higel Calder, is a book describing the authors' theory that cosmic rays play a large part in the formation of low-level clouds. Their theory is that electrons liberated by high-energy cosmic rays in the lower atmosphere interact with oxygen and sulphur dioxide to form clusters of sulphuric acid molecules. Those molecules then act as nuclei for water condensation, which forms clouds.
The chief source of sulphur over the continents is sulphur dioxide from human activity (burning coal or other fossil fuels). Over vast tracks of open ocean, sulphuric acid droplets are made from dimethyl sulphide. Because of the oceans' much greater area, the smelly gas produced by plankton is the top natural source of cloud condensation nuclei. (pp106-7, 127)
Low clouds have a cooling effect everywhere but Antarctica (where they warm the surface, due to the difference in reflectivity of ice and clouds). One could say that sulphuric acid plays a significant role in the global energy balance by helping to form the clouds that keep us cool.
