How Is Honey Made?

Answer Question

2 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

Bees make honey.  The honey is produced to ensure that the bees have enough food to keep them going over the winter.    Honey which is sold is produced within a hive.  This is a set of boxes which contain frames in which the bees build their combs (honeycombs).  The upper boxes are honey stores and the lower ones are the brood chamber where the queen lays her eggs and the young bees are reared.  The hive is a complex social structure with bees having specific roles and duties.  The drone bees have to look after the queen.  The queen is nurtured and fed on Royal Jelly, the ultimate bee food and she is responsible for starting new colonies.

Bees collect pollen from flowers and plants and convert the pollen into honey.  Overall the worker bees have to visit hundreds of thousands of flowers, just to produce a kilo or so of honey ~ so it is very labour intensive for the bees.
