We found our dog dead about 100 yds from the house. She was on her side and looked as though she died in midrun and fell to her side and never moved again not even her tail Why? Any ideas? She was an 8 yr old border collie who seemed very healthy and happy until I found her dead.

Had you ever fed her chocolate? It is TOXIC and cumulative in dogs and cats. Could the dog have gotten into antifreeze? This is also HIGHLY toxic to all animals, but they will readily drink it as it tastes sweet to them. Also, eight is not an unusual age for a dog of that size to pass away in certain circumstances...

I also lost a dog like this. I assumed that it was heart failure, or a burst blood vessel. We did not have the heart to have a post-mortem done, so we will never know for sure.
Dogs that have died from a poison generally show signs of distress for some time before they die, so I do not think your dog was poisoned.
