Sounds like California King Snake. They are found in various colors and patterns. They are not very active snakes and are normally found in west coat of California. Here's a link to this snake's photos.

THE ONLY Snake with Black and White stripes is a Sea Snake!
Not those others!
Their are Snakes with those colors, BUT NOT ONLY those two colors in stripes!
