Is There A Way To Measure Prejudice?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

It is very difficult to assign numerical values to abstract concepts.

First, one would have to have an agreed-upon definition of prejudice.  Who would be the people agreeing on the definition?  It would have to start with those assigning the values, whether hard numbers or some other kind of scale (e.g. Not prejudiced, somewhat prejudiced, prejudiced, very prejudiced).

But thinking about it now, that doesn't make sense.  Either a person has prejudice, or they don't.

What one could find out through a questionnaire is in what areas are people prejudiced?  This would be a fairly lengthy and involved questionnaire that would have many sections on topics such as gender, age, race, religious affiliation, nationality, income level, coffee choice, movie interests, music tastes, hair color, etc.

Very quickly we find out that there is a prejudice that accompanies every choice we as human beings make.

In constructing a way to measure prejudice, it would be best to focus intently on only a couple of areas.

For example: If we were to look at race, we know that's a very broad subject.  It might help to look at race in all aspects of a person's life: At home, at work, in line for a doughnut, at the store, driving on the highway, etc.

If you are planning on putting something together, I believe you have a lot of work to do.
