American astronomer Edwin Hubble's contribution to astronomy and his impact on modern science has been tremendous. His achievements are comparable to the scientific genius of English physicist Isaac Newton and Italian astronomer Galileo. Hubble's work led to a major change in our perception of the universe. Hubble shattered the then prevalent notion of the Milky Way as the extent of the universe. Through his observations he confirmed that there were other galaxies in existence. Edwin Hubble used what was then the newly built and the largest existing 200-inch telescope at the Mount Wilson Observatory located in Pasadena, California to make his discovery on the existence of galaxies other than our own. He also found that all of the distant galaxies seemed to be racing away from us.
