There are a number of regulations within the United Kingdom that determine manual handling procedures and the risks associated with the same. There are the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 and the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.
There are number of provisions within these regulations that govern what should or should not be done to avoid and reduce the risk of injury related to manual handling steps include carrying out a risk assessment, using mechanical levers and assistance wherever possible, involve the workforce, training, individual selection, provide personal protection equipment, produce a checklist. It is very important not to make regular staff carry out the staff for moving equipment or machines around in the office but only use those individuals trained for the same as injured personnel may turn round and sue the employer.
