I know this seems complicated but it is not..... IT takes practice.. You should go to www.ultimate-guitar.com/ this is an awesome site.

Remember this Eloping And Devoted, God Bless Everyone.  THe fat string is the one closest to you face the thin one is further away from your face unless you play it upside down which is ok. The weird phrase above is an acronym for E A D G B E.  THis is how the guitar is tuned.  Notice two e's?  It starts on the fat string. So do you know what a fret is? It is the space of wood in between those funny metal things. THis is wher you apply pressure to the string to create a note  fretting hard and soft will make a difference. Also dont fret over the metal but in between them. The metal is not the fret it is more so a marker. (though not its actual function)  About half of them also have dots  on them. So  if you look at  this pic you will c what i mean by the notes. OK now for the numbers. THe numbers is just simply the FRET you will play. THe numbers can range from 0-to 24 some guitars may go higher, but rarely. I have seen one.... Sickness too. NE how... So if the cords are
G and C as shown here

    tab is
    e--3---0------3---3
    b--3---1------3---5
    g--0---0------4---5
    d--0---2------5---5
    a--2---3------5---3
    E--3---x------3---x
         G   C      G    C
You would fret the 3rd string on the fat e the 2nd string on the second fat string or the A string.   Zero is simple an ":open string" that is no fretting is required. Just pluck the string with out touching and portion of the string.  X means dont play or lightly touch the string to"mute it"

Those cords above if you get my explanation are hard at first. Thefirst two are the cowboy cords or open position cords. The next ones are the same just in a different spot on the guitar. Play the G and then play the other g you should notice how similar they sound. The second series of cords have a "shape" you can move this shape just about any place on the guitar and have a new cord. THe "shapes"  are in just about every song ever written. Get to know that Bar COrd very well. THe open cords are less difficult at first so switch em up. THe bar is the pointer finger it must bar all 6 stings basically. Well I could go on for days on these things.  There is specific fingerings to make playing these cords easer, but i dont wish to try n explain that it would probably confuse you. Go to www.ultimate-guitar.com/ it has everything yuo ever need to know  read read read.
