Brazil is the largest nation on the South American continent and the fifth largest in the world, both in terms of area and population. It borders Venezuela, Argentina, Colombia, Bolivia, Peru, Paraguay, Uruguay, Suriname, Guyana and the French department of French Guiana. Its area is so vast, occupying nearly half the continent of South America, and borders almost every South American country, with the exceptions of Ecuador and Chile.

In the North, Brazil stretches from the Guiana Highlands to the plains of Paraguay, Uruguay, and Argentina in the south. In the west it, is the vast expanse of equatorial rain forest, bordering on Peru, Bolivia, and Colombia, while in the east it protrudes far out into the Atlantic. The total area of Brazil is 3,287,612 square miles, and its population as of 2005 was 184,016,000.
