What Happened In The Great Fire Of London?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

In 1666, in a bakery in Pudding Lane, a fire started.  It spread rapidly because houses were built with wooden frames, close together and most streets were narrow.  There was no such thing as a Fire Brigade and within a short time, the fire assumed massive proportions and spread relentlessly over the whole of the city.  Ash and debris were floating to the ground as far as Richmond, about 12-15 West.  The only thing that finally contained it was the King (Charles II) initiating/supporting the systematic demolition of buildings to interrupt the spread.  You can read the details and check my accuracy in any one of a number of good books!  One good thing came out of it: It killed most of the rats that were carrying the flea that spread bubonic plague -- the Black Death.
