When Matter And Antimatter Colide Does It Explode?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Yes.  Because they have opposite charges on all of their constituent parts.  Although rather than explosion, it might better be described as a flash of electromagnetic energy, including light.

There is some hope that we might find a way of harnessing this reaction to provide a cheap energy source in the future.  But of course, by its very nature, anti-matter is difficult to keep existing for very long. Also, the reaction produces very damaging gamma rays, so some pretty potent radiation that would have to contained to make it safe to use.  Some say it could only be used safely in outerspace (like in a spaceship), never on Earth itself.
