Hill is regarded as a part of a 1970s generation of directors who modernized American cinema. He has directed a number of films since the start of his career. His early films that earned recognition are Hard Times, The Driver and The Warriors. In the 1980s he directed films like The Long Riders, Crossroads, Southern Comfort, Streets of fire, Extreme Prejudice and Brewster's Millions. In the 1990s he directed films like Johnny Handsome, Geronimo, Wild Bill, Dead Wood, The Last Man Standing, A Fist full of Dollars, and Supernova.

He produced films like The Alien and The Alien Resurrection in the 1990s. Most recently due to his excellent directional work in the television series Deadwood, he received an Emmy Award in the year 2004. He has also directed the western mini series again for television named Broken Trail.
