The Sputnik was a space satellite program which was a part of the unmanned space missions which were started by the Soviet Union. This program was basically started to show the feasibility of artificial satellites in the late 1950's.

Sputnik 1 was the first artificial satellite to be launched on October 4, 1957. The second satellite was called Sputnik 2 it carried along with it the first living traveler which was a dog named Laika on November 3, 1957. The assignment planners had not offered or planned out a safe return for the satellite, hence Laika is said to be the first space victim. An attempt was made to launch Sputnik 3, on February 3, 1958 but it failed, though the second launch held on May 15th was successful. Sputnik 4 was launched on May 15, 1960, where as Sputnik 5 carried along dogs Belka and Strelka, forty mice, two rats and number of plants. It was launched on August 19, 1960.
