The Lake Mikri Prespa National Park is located in a shallow lake 30 km west of Florina iin Greece. It is in a remote and isolated area that is on the borders of Greece and Albania. It has a core area of 48 square kilometres, which is mainly the lake and its shores, and a peripheral zone around that of about 166 square kilometres.
The lake is one of the most important breeding grounds for water birds, a fact that was not appreciated until the late 1960s when bird experts discovered that the very rare great white and dalmation pelicans breed on the lake's shores.
The dalmation pelican is on of the most endangered large birds in the wrld and has been in decline for over 100 years. Mikri Prespa is also the most southerly European breeding side of the goosander. Other breeding birds of the lake include spoonbills, pygmy and common cormorants, grebes and glossy ibis.
