The Széchenyi Chain Bridge is located in downtown Budapest and it connects the city-centre on the Pest side of the River Danube with the area just below Castle Hill on the Buda side. The original bridge was built between 1839 and 1849 and designed by William Tierney Clark, a British civil engineer.

The total length or the Chain Bridge is 202 meters and it was designed as suspension style bridge, using stone and cast iron. The Chain Bridge, however, was nearly completely destroyed in 1945, as the German army retreated from Budapest when faced with the Red Army. Hitler's army actually bombed all bridges linking Buda and Pest. The Chain Bridge had to undergo massive reconstruction and was restored by 1949.

After 1949, the Communists also added the People's Republic of Hungary's official seal to the bridge, which included the red star. This was covered up for a few years after the 1989 change in regime and eventually replaced with Hungary's national coat of arms.
