How To Write A Good Essay?

Answer Question

5 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

Great language will not determine the quality of an essay. Every essay is contextual, to a particular situation or an audience. An essay can be termed 'good' only if it manages to address its context effectively.

Essay writing convention would demand that an essay should have an introduction, body and conclusion. The introduction must provide an overview of the essay writer's view point. The body is essentially the argument that the writer puts forth. The conclusion reinforces the argument that he is making. The complexity of the language used must be of a level that is appreciated by the reader. The ultimate disservice to an essay would be if the reader does not understand the writer because the language is a barrier. An essay is not a medium where the writer attempts to overwhelm a potential reader with his command over a language. There are some writers who put in days of preparation into an essay while there are some who can write 'on the fly'.

When writing an essay it is vital to thoroughly research the topic, then plan your essay carefully, after you have done all the research.
It is important to have an introduction, a main body of the essay and then a conclusion.  It is not always necessary to title these, they can just be 'mental markers' to help you structure your essay.
The introduction sets the scene for the argument that you will be presenting.  You need to try to engage the reader, whilst demonstrating that your essay has been well thought out and you are knowledgeable on the subject.
When planning the main body of the essay, write down all the facts that you want to include.  Every fact must back up the argument that you are presenting.  Arrange the facts/issues so that your essay flows logically and ensure you demonstrate the relevance of the points you are making.  Do not simply throw facts onto the page, show that you are presenting a well researched and structured argument.
The conclusion is important because this ties up all the points you have made and neatly ends the essay rather than it ending abruptly.

Writing an essay is not a difficult thing, once you get the basics of it right. The first thing you need to formulate is an outline of the essay that you are going to write. An outline simply aids to giving a proper flow to the essay, as a sort of a guideline to go by. The main problem that bad essays have is that the content is not organised in a systematic way.

An outline made prior to writing the essay helps in giving a proper structure to the essay and also makes it easier for the writer. Once you have written down a proper outline, for the essay, you will find that your train of thought automatically gains a steady flow and you are able to express your ideas and views in a better way.

        • When you write an essay use subheadings ie. Divide the whole essay into many paras and give it a suitable heading.

        • If you r writing about a war or a historical incident, discuss the causes, course, results in detail.Try to write the date when it took place.

        • If you are writing about scientific inventions, discuss its advantages and disadvantages in detail and separately.Write which year it was invented,by whom

        • etc.......

Write neatly.Do not mix up ideas.Make your point clear.
Use words that are impressive and related to the topic
        All the best....

        * Understand the topic (do not write irrelevant, or out of scope things)
        * Write points relevant to the topic and manipulate what should come first and para phrase accordingly
        * sub-heading should be given to each paragraph and ensure all referring to a particular idea should be contained within the same para
        * make sure ideas are not repeated
        * use synonyms to ensure words are not repeated
        * use advance vocab
        * quote real-life examples, quotations from authors should be referenced
        * proof read to ensure corrections
