It depends on what reading level you are looking for. Here's some I recommend

      Harry Potter Series
      Artemis Fowl Series
His Dark Materials Series (This is the series the Golden Compass is based on)
      Pendragon Series

These are a preteen-teenager reading level, but adults might like them too.

I would really recommend the chronicles of Narnia. My personal favorite is book5 (the voyage of the dawn treader). The story is simply fantastic, it's overwhelming and out of this world. C.s Lewis is way too awesome.! You also checkout Alice through the looking glass, it's a definite 'yes' to readers. Harry Potter book 7 (the deathly hallows) is dramatic, magical and thrilling as well (it's the best among the 7 books, for me). Dobby will die in book7.!!! It's tragic.! Oh, the poor creature. U really gotta try it. =P
