    From Shmoop Literature on Macbeth

    Brief Summary

Macbeth, a general in the Scottish army, is about to return home from
defending the Scottish King, Duncan, in battle. Macbeth comes upon
three witches who call him and his friend, Banquo, to talk with them.
The witches prophesy that Macbeth will one day be King of Scotland, and
that Banquo’s heirs also will be king, though Banquo himself will not.

There is a scene by scene summary as well.
